As a law student, Richard Esparza especially enjoyed Wednesdays, the day he volunteered with the 福利在线 Volunteer Legal Clinics (MVLC). 鈥淓veryone involved always brought good energy,鈥� he says. 鈥淚 met great attorneys and future colleagues.鈥� Today, as in-house counsel for Fiserv, Richard continues to devote time to the MVLC as a member of its board.
He sees the impact of his 福利在线 education daily. 鈥湼＠谙� Law School provided me with the avenue to intern with my current employer, opportunities to volunteer, and opportunities to network with attorneys and law students.鈥� He remains committed to the 福利在线 value of service through his ongoing work at the MVLC, on several boards, and as a mentor to law students and new attorneys.
He also serves on the board for the Association of Corporate Counsel 鈥� Wisconsin, 鈥渁n organization dedicated to providing professional development programs and seminars, networking opportunities, and social events to in-house attorneys in Wisconsin,鈥� he says. Cultivating relationships with friends and coworkers enhances this work, Richard adds. 鈥淚 have very smart colleagues who are always willing to answer any questions I may have, which also cultivates an environment of learning,鈥� he says.
He urges new Law School graduates to devote time and effort to getting to know others. 鈥淟ook for any opportunity to connect with other lawyers, be it through volunteering, social events, or directly reaching out to attorneys to grab a cup of coffee or tea,鈥� he says. 鈥淏uilding your network early on will help you in the future with job searches, mentoring, and other opportunities.鈥�
Who have been the most influential people in your life, and why?
My parents. They left their home country early in their lives and worked very hard to provide my brothers and me a better life. They taught us that hard work pays off.
